MISSION (NEWS 1130) – Due to what police are calling bizarre circumstances, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called in after shots were fired in Mission this morning.
At about 8:15 a.m., RCMP say they got a call that a man had apparently stolen a knife and some other items from a grocery store in the area of Highway 11 and Lougheed Highway and was seen walking into some bushes.
Police were then told that the man was heading toward a CP railway track at the back of the store.
“It is early in the investigation, but it is believed a CP Police Service officer engaged with the suspect and shots were fired. The suspect then fled police and was arrested by Mission RCMP officers a short distance away,” says IHIT Corporal Frank Jang.
The 33-year-old man was taken to the hospital and treated for some minor injuries. No one else was hurt.
A section of the railway track was closed temporarily but has since re-opened.
RCMP told the IIO what happened, but the agency doesn’t oversee actions carried out by CP Police, so IHIT was brought in. Mission RCMP will investigate the original theft complaint.
