MISSION (NEWS 1130) – A newborn baby who was found in a dumpster in Mission over a week ago has died.
The girl was discovered, abandoned near a daycare on Prentis Avenue, on Nov. 23. She was taken to hospital in critical condition, but died this past Thursday.
Mayor Pam Alexis says Mission is a tight-knit community with an outreach program called SARA that works with various agencies to help all women who consider themselves hopeless.
“It’s heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbreaking and so, we need to get the message out that there are people out there willing to assist. It’s very difficult for our community. An absolute tragedy,” Alexis says, adding that people should not lose faith the system will help them.
“The hospital or local fire department or police department or even our local leisure centre could assist and we hope and pray this doesn’t ever happen again.”
“Right now the cause of death is still being investigated,” said Cpl. Nathan Berze with Mission RCMP.
A 21-year-old woman from Mission was arrested but was later released without charges. RCMP have not shared any details about the potential relationship between the woman and baby, nor disclosed exactly how old the child was.
“With complex investigations like this, we need to get a full story and a full picture before we determine what, if any, charges are appropriate in this case so we’ll have to wait until the investigation is concluded,” Berze added.
There’s no word on how long the baby girl was in the dumpster before she was found, but Mounties say the incident was not linked to the nearby daycare.
Berze said the RCMP has been in touch with the Ministry of Children and Families, noting the RCMP will be working with multiple agencies on the case.
