Howling Friday windstorm still leaves many in B.C. without power

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A day after a powerful windstorm blew through the Lower Mainland, a few people are still feeling the effects.

BC Hydro says just about 500 customers are without power in Langley, Maple Ridge, and Mission Saturday morning.

And on Vancouver Island, around 5,000 people remain without power.

Tanya Fish with BC Hydro says the utility got ready when they got word of the storm coming.

“We inserted our storm response procedures just ahead of the storm, we did anticipate that we’d seen high winds, so we did bring on additional resources,” Fish says.

Fish says Hydro tried to get extra crews ready in advance of the storm.

“Both BC hydro crews as well as our contractor crews [were called to come in], and we also even brought in some extra crews that were on vacation,” she tells NEWS 1130.

On Friday, BC Ferries had to cancel sailings on seven routes because of those powerful winds.

BC Hydro says tens of thousands of customers in the central and southern Interior woke up to greet the New Year without power on Wednesday morning. The utility says an earlier snowstorm caused extensive damage to hydro infrastructure.
